Yet another AI calorie and macro tracker. But this time, it's free and open source. Bring your own key via Google AI Studio. Google's free tier pretty much covers one person forever, or until Google decides to tighten it up.

Most AI food trackers charge a subscription because every photo you scan costs them an API call. Eatlog doesn't have that problem because the calls run on your key, not mine. You make a key in Google AI Studio, paste it into the app, and that's basically it.

How logging works

You can take a photo, upload one, type out what you ate, search foods, or pull up something you logged before.

Eatlog Add entry sheet with photo, description, saved meal, food search, and weight actions

INPUT

Scan or describe it.

Snap your plate or type something like "1 cup rice and chicken adobo," and it breaks the meal into each ingredient with its own grams and macros. Taglish works too. If you haven't set up a key, search, manual entry, and saved meals still work.

REVIEW

Fix the estimate.

The AI will get things wrong sometimes, that's just how it is. You can change the portion, edit the grams, or tell it what it missed and it'll redo the estimate. It only goes into your diary once you save it.

Eatlog Analytics weight chart with scale points, trend weight, and goal progress

READ

Weight trend.

Your scale weight jumps around day to day, so Eatlog tracks a trend line instead. It also shows how fast you're actually losing compared to your plan, and when you'd hit your goal at that pace.

Eatlog plan recommendation asking the user to accept or keep the current targets

DECIDE

Target changes.

After a while Eatlog can tell if your calorie target is off, based on what you've eaten and how your weight's moving, and it'll suggest a new one. It asks first though, it won't change anything on its own.

Your data stays on your phone

There's no account and no server storing your diary, everything's saved locally. You can back it up, restore it, export it as CSV, or delete all of it whenever.

The egg is free. The omelette is optional.

Everything in the app is free, AI included, as long as you use your own key. Omelette is a one-time payment for people who'd rather not bother making a key, and it lets you use mine instead. It's just a Cloudflare worker with my own AI Studio key behind it, which is basically what every AI app does, except here it's optional. It also helps support me working on this.

Omelette

₱349 once

No API key or additional setup required.

Everything else is the same in both.

Omelette has a limit of 30 scans a day and 250 a month so nobody burns through my key. Full details are in the Terms.

Stuff people usually ask

The full versions are in the Privacy Policy and Terms.

Do I need an account?

No. The app makes a random install ID so Omelette can check if you paid and stop people abusing it, but it's not tied to your name or email or anything.

Do I need a key?

Only for AI scanning. Everything else works without one.

Is the Gemini key actually free?

Yeah, AI Studio has a free tier and it's more than enough for one person logging meals. There are two catches, though. Google sets the limits and can change them, and on the free tier Google can use what you send to improve its models. If either of those bothers you, you can use a paid Google project or buy Omelette.

How do I get a key?

Go to Google AI Studio, create a key, and paste it into Profile → AI estimates. Takes like two minutes. It's kept in your phone's secure storage and doesn't get included in backups.

Is it really open source?

Yes, so you can do pretty much anything with it. That covers the app code, not free use of the Omelette server, since that's my key and my bill.

What do I get with Omelette?

AI scanning without setting up your own key, that's it, everything else is already free.

Does it sync with health apps?

On Android you can sync weight with Health Connect.

Is this medical advice?

No. The estimates and targets can be wrong. If you have some sort of medical condition, go see a doctor.

The egg is still cooking.
